Dacor Warming Drawer Not Heating: What to Check First
A warming drawer that stays cool may have a simple setting or power issue, or a failed element or control. Here is how to tell the difference without opening anything.

A warming drawer does not behave like an oven. It holds food at serving temperature gently and takes time to get there, which makes a faulty one hard to spot. Plates stay lukewarm, bread goes cold on the rack, and you cannot tell if the drawer is slow or finished. This guide walks through what to check at home and what a technician will test.
Is it really not heating?
First, rule out expectations. A warming drawer takes a while to build up heat, and it will not feel hot like a stovetop. Put a heat-safe dish inside, close the drawer and give it a proper stretch of time before judging. Compare the drawer against what it did when it was working: if it used to warm a plate comfortably and now barely does anything, that is a real change.
Owner checks, in order
- Power. Confirm the display or indicator lights. If the drawer is dead, check the breaker. If the drawer is wired on a circuit shared with other built-in appliances, test whether those still work.
- The controls. Make sure the drawer is turned on and set to a warming level, not simply lit. Some models need a setting chosen after you press the power key, and some have a lock or a timer that stops the heat after a set time.
- The drawer closing. If the drawer sits slightly open or the front is riding on its slide, the heating cycle may not start. Pull it out fully, push it in firmly and check that nothing sits behind it, such as a pan handle or tray that is holding it back.
- The vent or humidity control. Many warming drawers have a vent slider or moisture control. If the vent is wide open, a drawer may warm more slowly and food may dry out faster.
- Load and cookware. Metal cookware heats more quickly than thick ceramic, and a drawer stacked full of cold, heavy dishes needs far longer.
- One controlled power reset. Switch off at the breaker, wait a short while and switch on again. If the display is normal and the drawer still does not warm, stop there.
What it can mean
- A heating element that has stopped working. The control calls for heat, the display behaves normally and the drawer never warms.
- A control or board fault. The element may be fine, but the command never reaches it, or the drawer shows odd behavior such as controls that respond intermittently.
- A drawer-closed sensor or switch. If the drawer does not register as closed, it will not heat.
- A thermal limit or sensor problem. A protective device that has tripped or a sensor that misreads can shut the heating down early.
From the outside these look almost the same, so the diagnosis comes from testing, not from the symptom.
Stay outside the cabinet
Do not remove the drawer front, pull the unit out of its cabinet or probe at the elements. Warming drawers sit beside electrical connections and are surrounded by wood and finished panels. If you smell burning, see smoke or find a hot spot on the cabinet side, switch the circuit off at the breaker and leave it off.
Installation notes for San Francisco kitchens
Warming drawers are often installed under a wall oven, beneath a microwave, or below a cooktop in a remodeled kitchen, finished with a panel-ready front to match the cabinets. That tight fit affects diagnosis. If a front has been adjusted or replaced to line up with cabinetry, the drawer may sit slightly out of square and fail to signal that it is closed. In older flats and row houses with limited access, a technician may need to remove a neighboring appliance to reach the drawer’s wiring, so telling us what is above and beside it saves time.
The model label on a warming drawer is usually on the drawer front edge or behind the drawer front, so you may have to pull the drawer out fully to read it. If you need help, how to find your Dacor model number covers the usual places.
When to book
Book once you have confirmed power, a closed drawer and the right settings, and the drawer still does not warm. Book at once if you notice a burning smell, melted plastic, or an element glowing unevenly.
The visit starts with diagnosis: we test the heating, controls and sensors, tell you what is wrong and put a written estimate in your hands. We do not repair anything until you approve it.

Using the drawer well once it is fixed
A warming drawer rewards a little habit. Preheat it before loading, cover food that should stay moist, and keep the vent setting matched to what is inside: crisp foods like a drier setting, braises and mashed potatoes like a closed vent. Do not store towels, paper or plastic in it, and do not use it as a place to hold food for long stretches. Good use does not prevent every failure, but it removes the overloaded and blocked conditions that mimic one.
Frequently asked questions
It will feel gently warm, not hot like an oven. Judge it by whether plates and food stay at serving warmth after a proper time, not by touch alone.
The display and the heating are separate circuits. A lit display shows the control has power, but the element or its sensor may still have failed.
Yes. A drawer that sits slightly open may not start its heating cycle. Pull it out fully and push it in firmly to check.
No. Food in a cool drawer is just sitting at room temperature, so keep hot dishes warm another way or refrigerate leftovers.
Share the model number, what the display shows and whether the drawer ever warmed. Mention what sits above and beside it in the cabinet.
