Dacor Dishwasher Not Filling With Water
A dishwasher that runs but never fills leaves dishes dry and dirty. Check the supply, the door and the codes before assuming the inlet valve has failed.

A Dacor dishwasher that hums, clicks or even sounds like it is running, but produces dry dishes and an empty tub, has a filling problem. The machine needs water to arrive, pass through a valve and rise to a level it can sense before it starts washing. A fault at any of those stages can stop the process quietly, and sometimes the only evidence is a short cycle and a code.
How a fill works
When a cycle begins, the controller opens the inlet valve and water enters the tub. The machine then checks that the water has actually arrived, using a sensor in the sump. If it does not see water, it treats the fill as failed. That sequence explains why a closed supply valve, a kinked line, a stuck valve and a faulty sensor can all produce nearly the same report.
Likely causes, starting with the simple ones
The supply valve
The shutoff valve under the sink may have been closed during plumbing work or a faucet change and never reopened. This is far more common than a failed appliance part, and it takes seconds to check.
The supply line
The flexible line between the valve and the dishwasher can kink when the unit was pushed back into place. A kink restricts flow without stopping it entirely, which gives you a slow, weak fill.
The door and latch
A dishwasher will not begin a fill if the controller does not see the door as closed. A latch that is slightly out of alignment, or a door that sits a little proud of a panel-ready front, can stop things before water ever moves.
The inlet valve and inlet screen
If the valve cannot open, or the small screen at its inlet is clogged with sediment, little or no water gets through. Older plumbing can shed debris, and a repair that touched the water line is a typical trigger.
Level sensing and the board
If water reaches the sump but the sensor does not report it, the cycle ends as if no water arrived. A wet or loose connector can cause a similar symptom, and the board is a less common cause than the parts around it.
What the codes say
On Epicure and Distinctive-style models, F1 is the inlet valve fault: the sensor in the sump did not detect water after the fill. On Modernist and Heritage-style models, 4C is the water supply check. Both point at the water arriving, though the cause may be upstream of the dishwasher. A broader reading of the family is in the Dacor dishwasher error codes guide.
Checks from the outside
- Open the shutoff valve under the sink fully. If you hear water running into the line, that is a good sign.
- Check that the supply line is not kinked or pinched behind the unit, without pulling the dishwasher forward.
- Run the kitchen faucet. If water pressure is low at the sink too, the issue is the building supply, not the dishwasher.
- Close the door slowly and listen for the latch. Make sure nothing in the lower rack blocks it.
- Write down any code and make one controlled power reset at the breaker. If the problem persists, stop.
Do not detach the supply line while it is pressurized, do not remove the lower panel, and do not try to open the inlet valve by hand.
Installation quirks that matter in Bay Area kitchens
In flats and condos with tight cabinetry, the dishwasher supply is often routed behind other plumbing, and a small kink can go unnoticed for years. In hillside houses, water pressure can vary between floors. If the problem began right after the kitchen was renovated, it is worth telling the technician, because the cause is often a fitting or a valve left closed or partly open.
Signs that point to the valve or the sensor
Some patterns separate a supply fault from a component fault. If you can hear water entering the tub but the machine still reports a failure, the valve is probably doing its job and the sensing deserves a closer look. If you hear nothing at all when the cycle starts and the shutoff is open, the valve, its wiring or the control signal is the more likely area. A fill that works on some days and not on others often involves a loose connector or a door that sometimes sits slightly open. Mention the pattern when you book.
Timing and detergent
If the dishwasher begins a cycle and pauses for a long stretch before anything happens, it may be waiting on a fill that is slow to arrive. Note roughly how long you waited rather than abandoning the cycle, and mention it. Do not add extra detergent to compensate for a weak fill.
When to stop
If water is reaching the floor, shut off the supply and the breaker and book a visit. A dishwasher that is not filling is usually not a hazard, but one that fills unpredictably and leaks is.
Booking and what comes next
The technician starts with diagnosis, checks the supply, the valve and the sensing, and explains the finding before anything else happens. You get a written estimate and nothing is repaired without your approval. Our Dacor dishwasher repair page describes the process in more detail, and the Dacor dishwashers page shows the lineup. Frequently asked questions
Yes. If the kitchen faucet is also weak, the dishwasher may not receive enough water to complete a fill. That points at the building supply rather than the appliance.
F1 is used on Epicure and Distinctive-style units and reports an inlet valve problem with no water detected in the sump. 4C is the water supply check on Modernist and Heritage-style units.
A partly restricted line, a clogged inlet screen or a level sensing problem can all stop a fill short. A technician can tell them apart by testing the path.
One controlled reset is reasonable. Repeated attempts just repeat the failure and may leave the machine locked in a fault state.
No. Leave it in place. A technician can pull it forward safely and has the means to disconnect the supply properly.
