Dacor EH36 Range Hood Repair

The EH36 is an Epicure series Dacor hood, tied to a manual from 2008. Over a six-burner or a wide range it is often the kitchen’s main ventilation, so when it weakens the whole room notices. Here is how a visit goes and what to try first.

What goes wrong

• Cooking smoke lingers in the room.
• The fan is quieter than it used to be, or louder.
• A light fails or the switch feels loose.
• Oily film around the filters and on the hood front.

Installation notes

A wide wall hood puts the blower above the range and sends air through a duct to an exterior vent. Over the years, filters load with grease, the blower wheel picks up film and the duct shows kinks or build-up, which together slow extraction long before anything breaks. In San Francisco’s older buildings the duct may be routed around beams and may run longer than a modern design would call for. When a hood has been in place since the Epicure era, the technician also looks at the mounting, the connections and the electrical supply for wear before settling on a cause.

What you can check

1. Check the circuit breaker and the wall switch.
2. Remove and clean the filters, then dry them thoroughly.
3. Look at the vent cap outside, if it is safely visible.
4. Try each speed and the lights and write down the pattern.

Leave the housing closed. Burning smell or sparks mean switch off at the breaker. If you have a gas range and smell gas, go outside and call the gas utility.
