About this model

Model overview

Dacor lists the HRV46S as a downdraft hood in the Heritage series, 46 inches wide. A downdraft pulls cooking air across the surface and down instead of up toward a hood, which suits islands and open kitchens where an overhead hood would block sight lines. Because it moves and ducts differently from a wall hood, the faults differ too.

The model in plain terms

Downdraft, Heritage series, 46 inches. The wider Dacor ventilation overview compares this style with wall hoods and integrated systems.

Common complaints

  • The vent does not rise, or rises partway and stops.
  • It rises but the blower stays quiet.
  • It pulls weakly and smoke drifts across the room.
  • The vent does not lower fully, leaving a gap at the counter.
  • Grinding or scraping while it moves.

Our guide to a downdraft vent that will not rise explains the usual causes in order.

How a downdraft install changes things

This type sits behind or beside the cooktop and rises out of the counter. The riser mechanism lives in a narrow cabinet space, and the duct usually travels down and out through the floor or a wall, often with several turns. A utensil dropped in the slot, a spill on the track or grease collecting in the plenum can all stop movement. In island installs the duct can run long through the floor structure, and that length alone reduces airflow. The technician has to check mechanism, filters and ducting separately.

Checks from the outside

  1. Check the breaker for the circuit.
  2. Look along the slot for anything blocking its travel.
  3. Clean the visible filters and wipe the surface around the opening.
  4. Operate the control and write down what the vent does and when it stops.

Do not reach into the slot or remove cabinet panels. If you notice burning smells, turn the circuit off at the breaker.
