You turn a knob on a Dacor gas cooktop or rangetop and hear the familiar clicking, but no flame appears. Or one burner lights and its neighbor does not. Or nothing clicks at all. Each pattern points to a different area, and the first question is always the same: do you smell gas?
Gas smell comes first
If you smell gas, leave the kitchen. Do not touch light switches, do not use the cooktop and do not try to find the leak. Go outside and call the gas utility or 911 from there. Everything else in this article waits until the smell has been dealt with.
What the pattern tells you
Clicks but no flame on one burner
This usually means gas is not reaching the burner properly or the spark is not reaching the gas. Common reasons include a burner cap that is not seated on its base, a clogged burner port, or a spark electrode that has become dirty or wet. Boil-overs are the usual cause.
Clicks and lights, then goes out
If the flame starts and dies when you release the knob, the flame is not being held. Sensing hardware, a draft from an open window or a misaligned cap can all contribute.
No clicking at all
If no burner sparks, the issue is likely electrical: the cooktop is not receiving power, a breaker has tripped, or the ignition circuit has a fault. A power cut or a recent kitchen job, such as moving a nearby appliance, is a clue worth mentioning.
Every burner clicks, none lights
That suggests gas is not arriving at all. Check that the gas valve serving the cooktop is open. If it is, and the meter has not been interrupted, the issue is in the supply side and calls for a technician or the gas utility, not for repeated attempts.
Checks you can do
- Turn all knobs off and let the cooktop cool.
- Lift off the grates and burner caps. Dry them completely if they got wet, then reseat each cap flat on its base so it sits level. A cap that is slightly off will block the flame and the spark.
- Look for food debris on the burner head and ports. Wipe with a soft brush or a damp cloth. Do not push pins or wire into the ports.
- Wipe around the spark electrode, the small ceramic tip beside the burner, with a dry cloth. Take care not to bend it.
- Make sure the cooktop has power and the breaker has not tripped.
- Confirm the gas shutoff valve for the cooktop is in the open position, without touching any fittings.
If the burner still will not light, stop. Do not use a lighter or match repeatedly to force it, and do not leave a knob on in the hope that the burner catches.
Why drying matters
Water in the burner base is a surprisingly common cause. After cleaning, burner caps and heads can hold moisture that blocks the flame and the spark. Allow them to dry fully, and avoid soaking them in a sink with the electrode attached.
Installation notes for cooktops and rangetops
Gas cooktops and rangetops are installed in a countertop cutout and connected to a gas line beneath. In Bay Area kitchens that have been remodeled, the line, the shutoff and the electrical outlet can sit in a cabinet below that is full of drawers or pull-outs, which makes access awkward. A technician will need to reach the underside without damaging the cabinet. In older buildings, low gas pressure or a shared supply line can also affect lighting. We check those details during diagnosis.
Models we see
Gas units such as the Dacor RNCT304G repair and Dacor RNCT305G repair cooktops from the Renaissance series, along with the Dacor DYRTP366SNGH repair rangetop from the Discovery iQ line, which is no longer sold new. The model label usually sits on the side of the chassis or under the control area, and our guide on finding a Dacor model number shows the places to look.
When to book a visit
Book if the clean, dry burner still will not light, if multiple burners fail together, if clicking continues after the flame is lit, or if the cooktop does nothing at all after a power check. Our technicians diagnose first, tell you what was found, and give you a written estimate. Nothing is repaired without your approval.
The Dacor cooktop repair page describes the service in full, and the Dacor cooktops and rangetops guide shows the types we work on.
After a power cut or a move
Electronic ignition depends on household power. After an outage the burners may need a moment before they spark normally, and a cooktop that clicked fine before a breaker was flipped may have lost its supply for another reason. If the problem began right after plumbing or gas work in the building, mention it when you book. The gas utility or a licensed plumber should confirm the supply side. We handle the appliance side.
Mistakes to avoid
- Leaving gas flowing while looking for a match.
- Cleaning ports with a needle, which enlarges them.
- Pouring cleaner on the electrode area while the burner is in place.
- Using a gas cooktop while a burner clicks continuously with no flame.
Frequently asked questions
Most often the burner cap is not seated, the ports are dirty or wet, or the spark electrode is soiled. Clean and dry them and reseat the cap before assuming a fault.
Only after a technician or your gas utility has cleared a gas smell, and not as a regular workaround. If a burner needs a match, it needs a diagnosis.
Leave the home, avoid switches and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not use the cooktop until it has been checked.
Continuous clicking after a burner lights can mean moisture or a stuck switch. A technician should look at it.
You can wipe the tip with a dry cloth. Bending, removing or adjusting it is a job for a technician.
